The Total Energy Story Long ago, probably around 1992, I bought this poster mag from a newsagent called Total Energy with Ian Roberts. Now this was a few years before Ian came out, and even before I'd even heard of him (I didn't follow ARL at the time). I bought the thing because it had this cute guy on it. A few weeks later a straight friend who did watch ARL came over and commented on the poster (the mag unfolded into a large poster of Ian in a pair of speedos). "You know he's gay?" commented Mitchell, and proceeded to relate some complicated story about some commentator slipping and revealing (get this) Ian's special "gay name". I concluded that either Sydney gay society was much more like a Renaissance secret society than Brisbane's, or this rumour was complete bollocks and forgot about Ian, until he started appearing in the gay press. Recently, I dug out Total Energy and found myself compelled to scan some of it in (regrettably not the wall-sized poster of the speedos). It gives us picture of a younger, slightly cuter, more heterosexual Ian. Several shots feature various bikini models quite prominently and he mentions his girlfriend several times. I realise this heterosexual factor could upset some people, but I think its important to acknowledge that our hero had some kind of public closet in the past.
