MANILA, Philippines (Reuter) - Homosexuals are not welcome
in the Philippine military and the armed forces chief has a very
simple reason: he doesn't like them.
``As far as I'm concerned there is no way we will accept
gays in the armed forces,'' chief of staff Gen. Arturo Enrile
told reporters Monday. ``I don't have to explain. I have my own
way of looking at things.''
If gays ever get into the service, ``peer pressure'' will
eventually force them to leave, the burly army general said,
adding he would ``deal accordingly'' with any member of his
staff who may have homosexual preferences.
Enrile's tough stance towards gays sharply differs from that
of national police chief Gen. Recaredo Sarmiento who said this
weekend they were welcome in the force as long as they did their
job and did not behave scandalously.
Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, nicknamed ``Dirty Harry,'' went
even further, saying homosexual policemen should be allowed to
put on ``a little blush-on and lipstick'' if they wanted to
provided they wore the proper uniform.
Lim's tough approach to crime as Manila's police chief
before turning to politics earned him the tag ``Dirty Harry''
after the trigger-happy cop portrayed by actor Clint Eastwood.
``There's no law barring any cop from looking beautiful when
conducting an investigation or an operation,'' Lim said last
week.
