LONDON (AP) -- Pope John Paul II has something in common with the
Dalai Lama, Madonna and young fashion followers: He's fallen for
the charm of Doc Martens military-Style boots.
``The pope joins a list of quite famous people who are known to
have worn Doc Martens footwear in their time,'' company spokeswoman
Louise Hurren told Associated Press Television Thursday.
The pontiff, usually seen in leather slip-on shoes, has
apparently been sold on the practical but trendy footwear.
The pope's staff has ordered 100 pairs of the cushion-soled
boots for the Vatican, including a pair of white brogues in the
pontiff's size, the company said.
``The order was placed by the Vatican and they have asked us to
supply a number of styles including the most famous eight eyelet
boot in black, white and navy leather and also some three eyelet
shoes,'' Hurren said.
The Vatican has had no comment on the boot orders.
Among the first to try out the new Doc Martens boots will be the
pope's Swiss Guards, the company said. Their black boots are mostly
covered by their gold-and-blue striped uniforms, which have
remained almost unchanged since the Renaissance.
Originally designed as work boots, Doc Martens are manufactured
in Northampton, England, and sold all over the world.'
