I'll try.

If Janeway is submissive and masochistic sexually, she could still be a
very effective Captain, but might be really inhibited about her
subordinates seeing her "that way".  It might undermine confidence and
moral if the officers and crew see her as harboring a secret wish to be
mastered, especially in combat situations, which is reason enough for
her to wish to keep those fantasies private.  Also, there might be no
man aboard ship who is sexy by her standards.  Also, she might
reasonably fear her bossy boyfriend carrying the love-game too far, in
one of many ways, so she limits herself to playing with a fantasy male
who's no threat to her real life.

Imagine Kirk having a fetish for bondage and enemas, for example. 
*NOW* imagine his harmless quirks becoming coffee talk in the mess. 
The future might be a real tolerant place, but *that* tolerant? 

What if Spock's selat was, shall we say, *more than a pet*?  Fine, BUT
what if the news got out!?  Sex desire is one thing, sex play is
something else, but your co-workers knowing is something else again!
