Female prostitution suspect mistakenly put in men's section of Denver jail

DENVER -- A woman jailed on prostitution charges spent 15 hours in the men's
section of the city jail before deputies discovered her gender.
Jimmie McGee had sex with two male prisoners during her stay.
"I don't think this has ever happened before," Capt. Carlos Jackson of the
Denver Sheriff's Department said Tuesday.
The incident is under investigation.
Jimmie Joe McGee, 38, was booked into jail about 1 a.m. Saturday on a
prostitution charge, and placed in the men's tank. The mistake wasn't
discovered until other prisoners tipped off deputies at 3 p.m., Jackson
said.
Guards interviewed the woman, who admitted to willingly having sex with two
prisoners, one of whom is a friend. She later was released.
McGee's attitude toward being locked up with 60 men was "nonchalant,"
Jackson said.
The mistake actually began before McGee was booked. The officer who arrested
her indicated on paperwork that the prisoner was a man. Jail guards thought
the same.
"Clearly, they believed it was a man," Jackson said.
McGee is 5 foot 7 and weighs 130 pounds.
During the night, McGee stayed by herself in an individual cell. But in the
morning, the prisoners were released from their cells and milled about a day
room waiting for court, Jackson said.
It was during this 30-minute wait that McGee slipped into a cell and had
sex.
Officer Rick Schneider said it's not always easy to tell the sex of
suspects.
"Some of the ladies turn out to be men, and some of them look like men," he
said.
