ROME (Reuter) - Space aliens take heart. If you ever make it
to the planet Earth, Father Piero Coda will help save your soul,
if you have one.
``Having their failings, and created by God and in need of
redemption, they too would have a part in the saving work of
Jesus Christ,'' Coda said in an interview published Wednesday in
a newsletter of the Italian bishops' conference.
Coda, a theologian, was asked by the SIR newsletter what the
implications could be for Catholic believers if it were proved
that extraterrestrials existed.
He said that if intelligent and free beings existed
elsewhere in the universe, religious solidarity would demand
that they too be offered a shot at salvation.
Coda asserted there would be no danger to traditional
Christian theology.
``It could be an enrichment, just as happened in the past
when European culture came into contact with worlds that had
been absolutely unknown before,'' Coda said.
