WOOT! Wow, I'm just encountering this post also for the first time. :) Looks like you were struggling with this way before I had my chocoholism-as-coffee-substitute historical moment. :)

I like the decaf espresso often, without changing frequency. One of the hardest things about quitting coffee for me has been in the bewilderment about how to go out and socialise (especially because I'm also generally not doing caffienated teas, don't drink dairy, and don't especially like soy, which means that a lot of mainstream versions of hot chocolate are also out of bounds)... Some good options for me also included constructing a social life which brings people into my home (where I have more control over the beverage options), rather than constantly going out to consume. And then also, simply being content to drink water or order myself a fruit juice.

Although... I've always thought it a bit nutty to fork out $3 for a glass of orange juice, when I'd far more mindlessly fork out the same amount for an espresso...

This is Your Brain on Caffiene.

I agree with his routine. Too much addiction to coffee can cause some health problems like palpitations due to high intake of caffeine.

As for me, I prefer to stay moderately addicted and limit the habit to 1 normally and 2 on a stressful day cups. There have been times, like when I fly interstate for the day, or when I have worked in places with free brewed coffee, that I have built up to maybe 7 cups and then had to go cold turkey to start the cycle again.
