New Chair

So when I work at home, I used to sit on a kind of crappy gas-lift chair that I bought from a chain office supply store. My beloved, in his endless quest to look after my back and shoulders, has expressed annoyance at the chair, the long hours I spend at it and my work in general for the effect they have on my neck pain and my posture.

It seems he’s decided to take action so this afternoon he took me to a local Herman Miller dealer to get fitted for an Aeron. It’s inexcusably luxurious and something I’d never buy for myself, but I guess that’s the ideal birthday gift. I’m humbled by having someone who cares this much for me, and my physical well-being, in my life.

Behold my new, elite seating apparatus:

  • Hi Tim - think those last two comments might be spam...

I did a similar thing and splashed out on a Herman Miller Mirra chair - Digital Eskimo use them for most/all staff, and I found the Mirra back fit my frame better. They're fantastic chairs, and reduce the back and neck issues I have from sitting all day in front of the computer.

I'm not sure I'd term it "inexcusably luxurious" - though I know the feeling you describe. If you think about it - in our profession (certainly in mind) you spend more time in your chair than any other piece of furniture. Herman Miller chairs also have a 12 year warranty.

If you average 5 hours a day, 5 days a week for the working year - over the life of the chair you spend over 14000 hours in the chair. That's an investment not only in your health, but also in sustainability (how many chairs have a 12 year warranty! and the Mirra is something like 80+% recyclable). Mine cost AUD$1100 - so about $0.07 per hour. Really - it's not that big an investment, and far better IMO than a disposable piece bought from an office store...

I use a trackball and ergonomic keyboard (Microsoft Natural) as well and find that dramatically reduces neck and shoulder strain. It's important to get monitors up to eye height to reduce neck strain also - looking at the photo of your workspace, we have a very similar setup...

An online dialog about library suggestions and feedback on services, databases and many things related to the Georgetown Law Library...Since I'm going to start working from home due to gas prices, I wonder if I can convince them to buy..

Yeah it could be the Gas canister is broken ... that happened to mine when i bought it i just took to canister back and they replaced it..On the top of the gas lift is a little nodule, the lever must touch that, you must be seated in the chair to get it to go down..

Having some shoulder problems myself, I'll be interested in how this works out for you.
